What good is a dog who can only SIT and STAY for a couple of seconds, but loses focus and leaves as soon as you look away? Little by little, we can add "duration" to any command by giving the dog a SUSTAINMENT REWARD. A sustainment reward basically tells the dog "I like what you're doing right now, keep doing it until I give you a break".
For example, if we want the dog to STAY longer, we put them on the box for a couple of seconds, wait a little bit, and give them a SUSTAINMENT REWARD in the form of verbal praise. So we reward them by saying "Good dog!" or give them a lick or piece of the reward as they are sustaining the STAY.
The same can be said for a long RECALL command: just slowly build it up every repetition or training session.
